"SPACIOUS SKIES"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

The Flathead Valley sunrise was taken by my friend Murray Suarez looking toward Glacier Park from the West Valley. Combining nature’s and man’s co-existence, this essay celebrates the Big Sky Country in general and the Flathead specifically.

"TWO POINTS OF VIEW"
11x14 limited edition of 100. This piece utilizes a base photograph of Two Medicine Lake and Sinopah Mountain (Glacier Park) taken by my friend Don Thompson. This is a dramatization of the idea of walking in someone else’s shoes to understand another’s point of view. Prey or predator? What are our roles? What are our choices?
This essay is composed of five photographs and many layers in Photoshop. Finding a fish with "attitude" that made a worthy predator was a challenge. The eagle with the fish in his talons (at the right) has also been added as have the affects of the ripples and water droplets. Don’s photograph depicts a pristine beauty and serenity that seems to be disturbed by survival.
"GIFTS"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

This piece gives thanks for God's gifts of water and oxygen, that help sustain life on this planet. It is composed of four separate photographs and includes a light source radiating from the Hand of God.

"HEALERS"
11x14 limited edition of 100. As a commissioned piece, this two-photograph design commemorates the healing enabled by S.A.M.S. Riders, Inc (Human Therapy on Horseback in Kalispell). Timothea and Bob Burmood - and their seven horses (Brio shown here) - have brought hope and healing into the lives of hundreds of children and adults diagnosed with physical, emotional or mental conditions. Bob loves trees and is a Bonsai enthusiast.
"IN MEMORY"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

Composed of two photographs, this piece celebrates the life and the passing of my mother. Of the many photographs I had of her, I focused my search for those from her prime of her life - to remember her beauty, joy and exuberance during her time with me. I was fortunate to find one with her looking back over her shoulder at me. That the light rays come up indicates a mountain top...appropriate to the theme.

Clients have had me do this piece, inserting their loved one into the scene.

"THE WONDER OF IT"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

A celebration of creation . . . with special thanks for the magnificant animals that share the planet.

The representation of the Creator in the upper left corner is from a photo of a painted scene in a church in Brno, Czechoslovakia.

This composition consists of eight photographs -- including the bison, wolf, owl (taken by John Splavec), a grizzly, a cougar and an eagle.

"CYCLE"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

Composed of three photographs, this piece essays the cycle of water as well as the power of the planet to purify the contamination that our lifestyles imposes on this resource.

"GLACIER"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

A tribute to Glacier National Park. This piece uses eight photos -- the main photo was taken at Logan Pass. In the background (blended into the sky) is a silhouette of the Glacier peaks as seen from Apgar at Lake McDonald. Within the foliage (hard to see at this size) is a grizzly (left), a fawn (center) and a deer (right). Also included is one of Glacier's white goats and an eagle in the sky.

"ANGELS AMONG US"
11x14 limited edition of 100. This piece is composed of six photos. The horses in the foreground (Shadow, Brio and Imp) and the winged horse (also Brio) are S.A.M.S. Riders' therapy horses (Human Therapy on Horsebackk)—I shot each horse as a separate photo, integrating them into a scene I took in the central valley looking toward Glacier National Park.

The 6-photo piece celebrates the magic and healing these beauties bring to our lives as well as the work done by Angels Among Us Equine Rescue & Sanctuary (both organizations are in Kalispell). Horses helping people. People helping horses.

"BUTTERFLY"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

Combining four photographs, I created a surreal effect with this composition. My sister had the earth-as-seen-from-the-moon photo since the seventies. I inserted a picture frame into the field flowers and strategically placed two butterflies.

"CHERIBUM"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

It seems that as children we have a greater connected-ness with our Source and with our Guardian Angels. A decidedly feminine hand of God reaches out to guide us back whence we came. This piece is composed of six photos.

"CHERUB"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

This composition serves a dual role. First, it is to remind us that we are not alone – we are watched, guided and protected. Second, this essay portrays the innocence of children. The innocence of us all.

"GLACIER NEBULA"
16x20 limited edition of 100.

I took the picture of the rock wall at Logan Pass in Glacier Park and substituted the sky with a Hubble space photo. I placed a Glacier goat (taken by my brother at Logan Pass) on one of the ledges. If you look closely, you’ll see that there actually is grass growing on another ledge. A three-photo composition

"ON A CLEAR DAY"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

Our imagination can take us beyond the limits of our physical plane. Tenaciously standing on the edge of this reality (tentatively holding on), while peeking into another. We are part of a greater whole. This composition combines a Hubble space photo of the Orion Nebula with a photo, which I silhouetted into the foreground,

"DREAM CATCHER"
11x14 limited edition of 30.

Commissioned as a companion to "Sioux Warrior", this piece is a testament to wolf magic. The dream catcher at the bottom right belongs to the client and was used to personalize the essay.

"SIOUX WARRIOR"
11x14 limited edition of 30.

Commissioned as a companion to "Dream Catcher", this piece pays homage to the legacy of America's heritage. A dominate Sioux chief, Waneta ("Charger") received six gunshot wounds in battles. He was painted by George Catlin in 1830. Son of Shappa ("Red Thunder"), Waneta was a Yanktonai Sioux of the Pabaksa or Cuthead band. The sand painting at the bottom right belongs to the client and was used to personalize the piece. There are only 30 copies of this essay..

"TEDDY BEAR"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

I admire the grizzly, as she is powerful, yet seldom the aggressor – except in caring for her young or defending her kill. She would rather avoid the hiker than confront him or her. This essay represents both the protective mother and the child within us all -- the child within that craves acceptance and love.

"BUFFALO EYE"
8x10 limited edition of 100. Reflecting on what once was. The buffalo symbolizes America's heritage. This composition gives thanks to those who have put time and energy into assuring that this part of our legacy did not become a simple footnote in our history books - that what once was, is still. Special recognition to Charles Allard, Michael Pablo and Charles Conrad for restoring the magnificent bison from the brink of extinction..
"GOOD HUNTING"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

The Creston area is one of the most fertile and beautiful in the Flathead Valley. The softness and tranquility of this photo is almost mesmerizing. My friend Don Thompson captured this lush and serene setting into which I placed the owl, the tree and branches at the left, the eagle, its reflection and a mouse just at the edge of the trees.

"BIRTH"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

This is a conceptualized representation of the school of thought that man evolved from the depths of the ocean. Certainly water is a major component of our bodies and our planet – about 60% of our bodies is water and about 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water. Of the water on the planet, less than 2% is fresh water and of that about 70% is tied up at the polar ice caps.

"THEN & NOW"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

The old Montana cowboy has seen it all. The good times and the hard times. From simplicity to technology. From horses to jets to moon landings. From the Brownie to the Polaroid to digital photography. From forking hay to bucking bales. All in one lifetime. The face on the right ("Now") is Art Hedin, a Montana cowboy whose memoirs I've written. Since he didn't have a photo of himself as a young man, for the "Then" face, I had to find a stock photo of someone with similar facial features.

"FLORA & FAUNA"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

Animals and nature have always been a passion. This composition blends the two perfect worlds into one breathtaking essay of beauty and magnificence. In the petals of the flower are the lion, a leopard, an elephant, a rhino, a monkey and an eagle.

"LOGAN CHIEF"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

I replaced the plaine blue sky in a photo I took at Logan Pass with a sunset I took from my home in the West Valley. I then "carved" a profile of an Indian Chief (with headdress) into the mountain.

"RED"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

Big Sky Country has the greatest sunsets. I created this piece from a photo I took behind my home, combining it with a pen and ink drawing of a bird, which I drew years ago. The drama of the sunset blends well with the alert vigilance and ferocity of the hunter. These are his skies, where he reigns supreme.

"CHERISHED HEARTS"
11x14 limited edition of 100.

Since high school it's been my dream to live in wide-open spaces and have a whole bunch of animals. Seven photos are used, with the background composed from two. The llama, the miniature horse in the background, the fence and the cat are separate photos. Thunder and Bruce were taken as one photo. I played with the clouds creating a heart and two dog faces.

"PEEK-A-BOO"
8x10 limited edition of 100.

Paying creative homage to the cat. The intensity of a cat's gaze is almost as if he or she is looking into the soul. Cats have a great sense of humor and some love to to play hide-and-seek. Even if you can't see them, you can feel their blistering gaze. I reproduced the photo of the rose twice more, each time enlarging it and placing it behind the smaller one. The shadow behind each creates a sense of depth.

"MOUNTAIN FACES"
16x20 limited edition of 100.

This composition integrates eight photos. Six of them are the animals (a horse, bear, wolf, eagle, mountain goat and a moose) "etched" into the face of the wall. I took the picture of the wall at Logan Pass and substituted a sunset photo I took at my home for the plain blue sky in the original shot of "Bishop's Crown" in Glacier Park.

PHOTO ESSAYS – A NEW MEDIUM FOR CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Not just pretty pictures, these pieces involve the viewer to explore, and dwell on, each image.

Animals and nature are my passion and weigh heavily in these pieces. I developed her technique in 1991 and often put a transparent treasure into each work -- creating a singular kind of art combining artistic expression with philosophy.

These photo essays are a three-part creation. The truly creative aspect is the starting point – the vision and concept. At this stage I have a mental image of the finished piece.

The second phase is hunting for the appropriate photos or taking new photos to complete the composition. In addition to my own photos I use shots taken by friends or stock photography, where appropriate. The interrelationship and the attitude of each photo are critical to the finished piece.

The final stage of the process is the hands-on technical skill, which involves various computer techniques. Sometimes I need to set a work aside only to return to the pallet with a fresh idea on how to implement the desired effect and affect.
